🍽️ Starting a catering business in Spartanburg, SC: which licenses and registrations do I need?

Jasmine wrote: “I run a catering business specializing in different cultural cuisines blended with southern home cooking, and I also bring a burst of flavorful sauces and marinades.”

Hi Jasmine, congratulations on Flavaful Fusions! Because you shop for confirmed orders, catering keeps waste low and lets you price each event for a healthy profit. You told us you want to protect your personal assets, limit exposure from sales, clients, employees, or debt and look more credible to customers and banks, and that is exactly what an LLC is built for. Below we walk through the three things every new business in South Carolina sorts out (structure, tax IDs, and licenses) and then sum it all up.

Catering cuisine that blends cultures with southern cooking is a strong story, and in South Carolina the kitchen is the legal center of it: catering generally needs a licensed kitchen, not a home one. Bottled sauces and marinades are a separate step, because selling them means labeling with ingredients and allergens, and some sauces need a process review for shelf stability. Register for sales tax, since prepared food and packaged sauces are both taxable. Four of your reasons point to the public, and the first guest with a food allergy is the moment an LLC proves its worth. Keep recipe notes and written event contracts with deposits. What Flavaful Fusions needs LLC (limited liability company) – An LLC shields your house, car, and savings from claims against the business, and it looks more established to customers and banks. If guests get food poisoning at a wedding you catered, an LLC helps keep that claim against the business. Once profits grow, an LLC can elect S corporation tax treatment, which can lower self-employment tax; ask a tax adviser when the numbers justify it.DBA (doing business as) registration – If you operate as a sole proprietor, or under a name different from your LLC's exact legal name, registering "Flavaful Fusions" lets you use it on signs, invoices, and your business bank account.EIN (federal tax ID number) – You plan on 1 employee, so the federal tax ID number (EIN) is required for payroll, and you will also use it for the business bank account and supplier accounts.South Carolina sales tax permit (seller's permit) – It lets you collect sales tax from customers and hand your suppliers a resale certificate, so wholesale purchases of inventory stay tax-free and properly documented.South Carolina employer ID – With 1 employee, you need a state employer account number for payroll withholding and unemployment insurance. It works like the EIN, but for state payroll taxes.Business license – Governments license businesses so they can collect a modest tax, usually based on gross receipts or a flat yearly amount, and keep inspectors checking safety: exits, fire extinguishers, and how many people a space can hold. Plan on one for Flavaful Fusions in Spartanburg. Home occupation rules commonly cap client visits and delivery trucks on a residential street, so read them before you print business cards.Food permit and licensed kitchen – Most states require caterers to cook in a licensed commercial kitchen and hold a food permit.Food handler or manager certificate – Many states require food safety training for staff and a certified manager.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For a catering business it is NAICS 722320 (Caterers). With 1 employee planned, you are already creating jobs in Spartanburg. That makes 8 items on your list.

Tip: Check whether your state allows home kitchens for any catering, since most require a commercial kitchen.

To recap: Flavaful Fusions in Spartanburg, SC needs an LLC, a DBA, an EIN, a sales tax permit, a state employer ID, a business license, food permit and licensed kitchen, and food handler or manager certificate. With the paperwork done, the fun part begins: serving your first customers.

I need advice on business insurance, finding investors, a website and advertising for my record label. Does the LLC service include the state fee and an operating agreement?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

For a record label, an LLC is the right base. You handle artists' contracts, royalties and releases, and the LLC separates any dispute from your personal assets. The state's filing charge is shown apart from our service fee on the order page, and the operating agreement is prepared with your LLC, so your bank can open the account.

• Insurance: ask an insurance agent about general liability and media liability for a label, plus coverage for equipment.
• Investors: they usually want a formed LLC, an operating agreement and clean books first, then a clear plan for how their money is used.
• Website and advertising: register the name and open the bank account before you spend on promotion.

A surety bond is not what you need. Insurance protects you from claims, while bonds guarantee performance in certain regulated trades.

Do I need an LLC and a tax ID if my items are not taxable in my state? I also need to register a business at an address in Georgia.
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

Yes, an LLC still makes sense even when your products are not taxable. Taxability is only about sales tax, while the LLC is about protecting your personal assets from product and customer claims, and about credibility. With investors in mind, a formal company is what they will want to see.

On the tax ID, you still need an EIN for banking and federal taxes, since that is separate from sales tax. A seller's permit may not be needed if everything you sell is exempt, but many suppliers and marketplaces still ask for one, so check with them. Health and beauty products can be taxable in other places, so check where you sell.

For the Georgia address, I cannot supply an office location. Register the business at the real place where you operate, or use a registered agent's address for state papers. A local business license depends on that location.

I live in New York and want to start a mobile petting zoo. I also want to sell gift baskets by taking the order and having a company ship it. What do I need, and can I charge sales tax?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

A mobile petting zoo carries real risk, since children and animals mix and a bite or a fall could lead to a claim. An LLC is the proper vehicle, because it separates that exposure from your personal assets, and it can bring in investors. A foreign owner is fine for an LLC.

• Petting zoo: animal exhibits are regulated, so expect animal health paperwork, permits for events, and liability insurance that venues will ask for.
• Business license, locally, plus approvals for each event location.
• EIN, for banking and taxes.

For the gift baskets, to charge sales tax you need a seller's permit, which in New York is registered as a certificate of authority. Even if you never touch the product or the money, if you take the order and your company is the seller, you generally must be registered to collect tax. If the other company is the seller of record, it may handle that, so clarify who sells.

How long does it take to get a reseller's permit in New York with expedited service? I do not have a certificate of authority for my LLC. I also have questions about zoning for a home inspection business.
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

In New York, the sales tax registration is called a certificate of authority, and a reseller's permit is built on it, so you do need one for your LLC. We can file it with expedited handling, which moves faster than standard processing, but I cannot promise a specific number of days because timing depends on the application.

Home inspection is a service, so the permit matters mainly if you also sell products or tools that are taxable. Your LLC fits the business well: inspectors face claims when something is missed, and the LLC separates those from your personal assets.

• Zoning: a home office is usually allowed, but you do not need a vote from the town council in most cases. Ask locally whether a home occupation approval applies.
• Professional license: home inspectors are licensed in many places, so confirm before you take clients.

File the certificate of authority well before your first sale, since New York asks that you register in advance.

What license do I need to buy seafood in Louisiana, transport it to Tennessee and sell it to restaurants and the public, and do I need a wholesale license?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

Form an LLC before anything else. Moving fresh shrimp and other seafood across state lines involves spoilage, illness and vehicle risks, and the LLC protects your personal assets while showing restaurants that they are dealing with an established company. A foreign owner can hold an LLC, too.

• EIN, for the account, payroll and supplier accounts.
• Seller's permit: it works as your wholesale and resale registration, so you can buy without tax and sell with tax. You may need one wherever you sell.
• Seafood dealer permit: seafood is regulated at each step, including buying, cold storage and delivery, so ask where your product is sourced and sold.
• Business license, locally.

Whether you open a fish market or a restaurant, each needs its own food permits and inspections.
